Rhodes Skype

Yesterday at lunch I held our very first Skpe Admission session with Rhodes College. Around 8 Trinity Juniors and Seniors attended the event. Katie Frick, the Admissions Counselor for Rhodes that represents our area did a wonderful job talking about Rhodes, Memphis, and the experience of a liberal arts education.

Rhodes College www.rhodes.edu  is located in Memphis, Tennessee and was founded in 1848. Approximately 2,000 students are enrolled at Rhodes with average class sizes of 14 and a 10:1 student to faculty ratio. Business and economics are their two most popular degree programs. Here are some of the takeaways from the Skype event that I wanted to share...

  • Rhodes provides a well rounded liberal arts education for its students.
  • Students attending Rhodes do not officially select a major until their sophomore year so that students can explore various fields of study before being committed to something early on. In fact Katie reminded the students that over 80% of college students switch majors at some point.
  • The foundations program is a requirement for all Rhodes students. Meaning students will graduate with a selected major, a required foundations course, elective courses, and participation in co-curricular activities. Much like Trinity School, Rhodes aims to educate the whole person, prepare a well rounded student, and prepare that student for life long learning.
  • 65% of students at Rhodes study abroad, 75% of Rhodes students complete internships
  • Rhodes has an active student activities body and does a large amount of community service work within the Memphis community.
  • In addition to the majors offered at Rhodes, Rhodes offers several pre-professional programs such as pre-law, pre-med, and pre-engineering. Their mock trial team for instance is ranked 2nd in the entire country. Students wishing to major in pre-engineering can participate in the Rhodes 3-2 program where the student spends their first 3 years at Rhodes graduates, and then completes the engineering degree program at Washington University in St. Louis. They have similar type programs with Memphis University and other Tennessee universities so that students can go on to earn degrees in those pre-professional programs.
  • Don't like math? Rhodes allows students to take Logic out of their philosophy department to count toward their degree requirement in mathematics.
  • Rhodes has the longest running  rivalry in the south when it comes to playing Sewanee in football .
  • Memphis offers $5 tickets for students to NBA basketball games and other musical events. And, if you love bbq Memphis has some of the best in the country.
  • Campus security...Rhodes has as many security officers on their campus as Memphis University that enrolls over 20,000 students. Parents and students can rest assure that Rhodes makes for an inviting, secure, and comfortable place for higher learning.
  • Rhodes awards $17,509 on the average in merit aid. Scholarships exist for students in the fine arts, physics, ROTC, and the Bonner community service scholarship.
  • Did I mention that Rhodes according to Princeton Review has the 3rd most beautiful campus in the country?
If you are looking for a great liberal arts experience I encourage anyone to take a look at Rhodes. I want to thank Katie for the wonderful presentation and the students that attended. Students check your email and the schedule to learn about more upcoming Skype events!!
